These troops, broadly referred to as Hessians, arrived in large numbers, bringing their expertise and battlefield discipline to the fight against the American rebels.
Hessian regiments were well-drilled and eager for combat, fighting effectively in line formations while also providing specialist light infantry and grenadier support. Their presence reinforced British ranks and gave commanders additional tactical flexibility, whether in open battle or skirmishing against Patriot forces.
